Australia-Indonesia Cyber Policy Dialogue

The first Australia-Indonesia Cyber Policy Dialogue was held in Canberra on Thursday 4 May 2017. The Dialogue was held
in a spirit of collaboration, openness and a common purpose to strengthen cooperation on cyber issues. The meeting
recalled the Joint Statement of 26 February 2017 by Prime Minister Turnbull and President Widodo in which they welcomed
the agreement between Foreign Ministers Bishop and Marsudi to establish the Dialogue.
Australia and Indonesia reaffirmed their commitment to an open, free and secure internet for economic growth and
innovation, and resolved to further deepen cooperation to deal with cyber threats. They welcomed the important contribution
of the UN Group of Governmental Experts on norms to date and looked forward to a successful conclusion of the current
GGE. They agreed to work closely together and with other regional partners on measures to reduce risk in cyberspace. The
two countries also agreed that the Cyber Policy Dialogue provided a strong foundation for future cooperation.
The two sides discussed the full range of cyber issues including the respective visions of the internet and cyberspace,
exchanging cyber threat perceptions, policies and strategies, regional and international developments. The dialogue further
discussed potential bilateral cooperation to promote a safe, open and secure internet for economic and social development.
The Dialogue was led for Australia by Dr Tobias Feakin, Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, and on the Indonesian side by
Ambassador Desra Percaya, Director General for Asia Pacific and Africa Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Dialogue
included, on the Australian side, representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Department of the
Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Department of Communications and the Arts, and Australian Cyber Security Centre agencies
(the Attorney-General's Department, the Department of Defence, the Australian Federal Police, and the Australian Criminal
Intelligence Commission). On the Indonesian side, the Dialogue included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs,
and the Indonesian National Police.
The two countries decided to hold the next round of the Dialogue in Indonesia in 2018. Indonesia appreciated the hosting of
the Inaugural Cyber Policy Dialogue by Australia.
