Chapter 1 – Our Vision, Values and Approach 9 Chapter 1 – Our Vision, Values and Approach Our vision 1.1 Our vision is for a secure and prosperous United Kingdom, with global reach and influence. Everything we do in the UK and around the world is driven by our determination to protect our people and our values, and ensure that our country prospers. 1.2 Economic security goes hand-in-hand with national security. Since 2010 we have restored our economic security to live within our means. We now have one of the fastest growing developed economies. We have chosen to invest in projecting our power, influence and values. We are the only major country in the world to spend both 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defence and 0.7% of Gross National Income (GNI) on overseas development. These commitments will increase our security and safeguard our prosperity. 1.3 To underpin our vision, we have an ambitious, forward-looking National Security Strategy: •• We will strengthen our Armed Forces and our security and intelligence agencies so that they remain world-leading. They project our power globally, and will fight and work alongside our close allies, including the US and France, to deter or defeat our adversaries. •• We will further enhance our position as the world’s leading soft power promoting our values and interests globally, with our world-class Diplomatic Service, commitment to overseas development, and institutions such as the BBC World Service and the British Council. •• We will invest more in our current alliances including NATO, build stronger relationships with growing powers, and work to bring past adversaries in from the cold. •• We will strengthen our domestic resilience and law enforcement capabilities against global challenges which increasingly affect our people, communities and businesses. 1.4 In particular, over the next five years our priorities will be to: •• Tackle terrorism head-on at home and abroad in a tough and comprehensive way, counter extremism and challenge the poisonous ideologies that feed it.
