- Responsible body for the promotion, coordination and supervision of all politics and activities related to the protection of critical infrastructures and cybersecurity under the watch of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior; accountable to the Secretary of State of Security
- Three pillars:
- CIP system (system for Critical Infrastructure Protection)
- Comprehensive security
- Public-private partnership (PPP)
- Has 3 structural areas:
- Plans and Security Service: Coordinates necessary actions for the implementation of the CIP Planning Template. In addition, through the Coordination and Warning Center (CECOA) it is in charge of the custody, maintenance, management and exploitation of the National Catalogue of Strategic Infrastructures and of Database Feeds and Updates
- Cyber Security Service – Office of Cyber Coordination: In charge of coordinating all aspects related to the cyber security within the Secretary of State for Security and, especially, those related to cyber security of infrastructures and essential services at national and international level
- Policy-Making and Coordination Service: Provides support to the two former sections on tasks related to the regulatory and legal framework; the acquisition, treatment and distribution of information; those related to R&D&I; and the relations and coordination with other national and international agents. With regard to these issues, CNPIC is the point of contact with the European Union and third countries
