DIGITAL TRADE
AUSTRALIA WILL:
1.01 Advocate for further digital trade liberalisation and facilitation through free
trade agreements and participation in the WTO, OECD, APEC and G20
HARMONISE STANDARDS
An enabling environment for digital
trade requires clear standards.
Australia’s interests in the development
of standards is discussed in the Cyber
Security chapter. However, developing
these standards in isolation will not
achieve the desired outcome. Standards
need to be harmonised between
countries to improve the conditions for
global digital trade by making it easier to
do business across borders.
Just like global trade rules, international
standards need to be industry-led
and technology-neutral. In particular,
Australia supports the development of
globally interoperable Internet standards
and associated reference architecture,
as well as ISO 27000 Information Security
Management Systems standards.
To reduce the need for burdensome
regulation, Australia also supports
increased cooperation between national
standards bodies and regulatory
agencies across the Indo‑Pacific.
Australia will further reduce barriers
to trade by proactively harmonising
standards and promoting international
trade across the Indo‑Pacific.
AUSTRALIA WILL:
1.02 Support capacity building projects in the Indo‑Pacific to encourage the
harmonisation of international standards for digital goods, building trust
and confidence in digital trade
