- 32 - AG/RES. 1984 (XXXIV-O/04) INTER-AMERICAN COMMITTEE ON SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (Adopted at the fourth plenary session, held on June 8, 2004) THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, HAVING SEEN resolutions CIDI/RES. 55 (IV-O/99) and AG/RES. 1678 (XXIX-O/99), “Mechanisms for Implementing the Inter-American Dialogue on Partnership for Development”; and CIDI/RES. 131 (VIII-O/03) and CIDI/RES. 160 (IX-O/04), “Inter-American Committee on Social Development”; CONSIDERING: That the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) established, through its Permanent Executive Committee (CEPCIDI), the Social Development Committee, pursuant to resolution AG/RES. 1424 (XXVI-O/96); That, by resolution AG/RES. 1678 (XXIX-O/99), the name of the Social Development Committee was changed to the Inter-American Committee on Social Development; That in the Declaration of Margarita of the High-Level Meeting on Poverty, Equity, and Social Inclusion, the high authorities responsible for social development policies and programs encouraged the Committee to hold a meeting in 2004, and instructed the Unit on Social Development and Education to support the work of the Inter-American Committee; That, in the Declaration of Nuevo León of the Special Summit of the Americas, the Heads of State and Government recognized the urgency of strengthening OAS mechanisms for fighting poverty, such as CIDI, the Inter-American Committee on Social Development, and the InterAmerican Program to Combat Poverty and Discrimination; and That the purpose of CIDI’s Inter-American Committee on Social Development is to strengthen inter-American dialogue to support policy development and cooperative action on social development matters, in particular to fight poverty and discrimination in the Hemisphere; and BEARING IN MIND: That the Inter-American Committee on Social Development held its first meeting in Santiago, Chile, on April 5 and 6, 2004; That during said meeting the Committee considered its Draft Rules of Procedure, contained in document CIDI/CIDES/doc.3/04 Rev. 2, and recommended that CIDI approve them; and
