A number of new and major risks exist in cyberspace such as: organised crime in cyberspace, hacktivism, cyberattacks, unplanned disruptions to network integrity and security due to human errors or factors, cyber terrorism, abuse of personal data, child online pornography, loss of money or data due to activities in cyberspace, etc. With the increase in sophistication of these cyber threats, risks, and cybercrime over the years, the necessity of developing a coherent approach to effectively detect, prevent and mitigate both current and future Cyber threats arises, hence the motivation to develop a National Cybersecurity Strategy for Botswana. The strategy will help initiate a systematic national programme to defend cyberspace from threats irrespective of their origin. Critically, the strategy prioritises cyber threats and risks as well as allocation of responsibilities, to ensure that all relevant stakeholders accept responsibility for and take appropriate steps to enhance cybersecurity.
